Madonna has laryngitis, cancels New Jersey concert
Thanks to a case of bad pipes, Madonna won’t be taking her music to the masses Friday night.
The pop diva has come down with a nasty case of laryngitis, forcing her to nix her show at New Jersey’s Continental Airlines Arena and ticking off some 20,000 fans who managed to negotiate jammed switchboards, snaking ticket lines, an AOL promotion or money-grubbing scalpers to see the Material Girl on her first tour in eight years.
“She is canceling the show under doctor’s orders,” Madonna (news – web sites) rep Liz Rosenberg says. The 42-year-old singer has apparently been told to stay in bed.
The Friday show, the second of two consecutive nights at the Meadowlands venue, won’t be rescheduled. Ticketholders can pick up refunds at the box office or Ticketmaster outlets.
Rosenberg says Madonna should be in good voice for her next scheduled show Monday at Boston’s Fleet Center.
So far, Madonna has played 26 of 48 dates on her sold-out Drowned World Tour, which launced in Barcelona in June before moving Stateside in Philly July 21.
Meanwhile, in other news from the Material World, Madonna’s used duds are in major demand.
A Dolce and Gabbana bra worn by the singer during her Girlie Tour, expected to go for about $7,000 in an online auction cosponsered by Sothebys.com, fetched a bodacious $28,500. That’s a record for a Madonna garment, under or otherwise. All told, the auction, which ended Wednesday, took in more than $200,000.
