Cruel War is an American folk song about the love a young woman has for her young soldier, who is headed off to fight in the Civil War here in the states. She is heartbroken, and begging him to let her go with him; she’s even willing to disguise herself as a man to be with her love, knowing that this may be the last time they see each other. He is also heartbroken, barely resisting her entreaties, because he does not want to see her dead, either. He resists, until finally……they will go to war together.
