Mya To Appear In ‘Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights’
Singer/dancer Mya has landed a supporting role in the forthcoming film Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, a sequel of sorts to the smash 1987 film Dirty Dancing. Patrick Swayze reprises his role as Johnny Castle in the film, which now takes place in revolutionary-era Cuba.
The Washington, D.C.-bred performer, who was also featured in the Oscar-winning film Chicago, says she recently wrapped up filming of Havana Nights and shared some of the plot details. “Dirty Dancing 2 is a movie called Havana Nights, it was shot in Puerto Rico not too long ago, they’re still filming actually, and it comes out February of 2004,” Mya said. “It takes place during the Cuban Revolution and the movie actually involves a lot of Afrocentric, Brazilian, Latin-inspired dance, as well as love, and the history, as well as racial tension.”
Mya is juggling film roles with her ongoing career as a recording artist. Her third solo set, Moodring, enters the Billboard 200 chart at Number Three this week. Her single “My Love Is Like … Wo” is currently at Number 19 on the Radio & Records urban airplay chart.
Mya’s previous album Fear Of Flying bowed back in 2000, and Mya spoke about what the break between recording projects was like. “My second album came out 2000, of course, it was called Fear Of Flying and it is now 2003,” Mya said. “I’m happy to be back on the scene because of course this is my first love, I love singing, I love performing. And it’s my time, you know, I’m just looking forward to going on tour and doing what I love to do. My album is out in stores, my third album, and it’s called Moodring.”
