Mirella Freni Honored at Met in Likely Farewell
NEW YORK – With tears in her eyes and a tissue in her hand, Mirella Freni stood on the Metropolitan Opera stage as confetti fell and flowers were tossed. Freni wouldn’t say whether Sunday night’s gala concert honoring the 40th anniversary of her company debut and the 50th anniversary of her professional debut was her Met farewell, but it certainly seemed like it.
The concert concluded with the third act of Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin,” where the 70-year-old’s final line as Tatyana was “Proschai nayvek!”
