Michelle Williams Lands Role As Roxie Hart In Broadway Play “Chicago The Musical”
Michelle Williams, of the top-selling female group of all time, Destiny’s Child, has landed a role of Roxie Hart, a murderous chorus girl in the West End production of “Chicago The Musical.” The singer and actress who has been working as a solo artist for the past few years and who has appeared on Broadway after taking the place of Toni Braxton as “Aida” in 2003, will appear at Cambridge Theatre (Earlham Street, Seven Dials, London WC2) spanning over six-weeks from July 13, 2009 – August 23, 2009
According to Michelle Williams, she has been thrilled about being in the production stating, “It’s a real thrill to be given the opportunity to play Roxie Hart in the West End’s spectacular production of ‘Chicago’.”
The singer goes on to state that it’s both a challenge as well as a lot of fun trying to bring her character to life on-stage and hopes that everyone comes to the show and will enjoy it as much as she does.
Williams will be one of a select few of actresses of color to have played the role of Roxie Hart and the first in the West End’s 12-year-run. Previous stars to have played Roxie Hart include Ruthie Henshall, Brooke Shields, Tina Arena, Denise Van Outen, Ashlee Simpson, Lisa Rinna, Robin Givens, Melanie Griffith and Bebe Neuwirth.
In 2006, Michelle Williams made her debut as a guest on the UPN series “Half & Half” which was followed by a number of guest appearances on other television shows. In 2007, the singer and actress joined the musical “The Color Purple” which toured to several cities in the U.S.
