Nelly Furtado Starts Indie Label, “I Always Secretly Wanted To Be An Indie Artist”
Nelly Furtado the “Fly Like A Bird” songtress has reportedly launched her own Indie record label Nelstar in cooperation with the Canadian independent label group Last Gang Labels.
According to Billboard, the singer has already signed her first act, a band named Fritz Helder & the Phantom who will release their first debut album July 7. With Nelstar, Nelly Furtada is giving the band creative freedom by allowing them to remain signed to their own label, House of Helder which will become an imprint of Nelstar.
Nelly Furtado states that she’s never considered having her imprint Nelstar under home label Interscope and reveals, “But I also think that it’s best to start off an indie. When you are a new band and you sign to a major, you get thrown to the fire. Plus, I always secretly wanted to be an indie artist.”
The singer also goes on to state about how she wishes she could have did something like indie artist Ani DiFranco stating, “When I was a teenager, I loved Ani DiFranco and hoped I could do something like that. A major turned out to be my destiny, but I’m enjoying reconnecting with the indie world.”
