Carlene Carter Jailed After Failing Drug Test
Carlene Carter was sent back to jail late last week after reportedly failing a drug test. The singer, who is the daughter of the late June Carter Cash and stepdaughter of the late Johnny Cash , was taken into custody by Sumner County, Tennessee authorities on Thursday (April 1) but would not reveal the reason. The Nashville CBS-TV affiliate later reported that Carter had failed a mandatory drug test.
The singer was arrested in New Mexico in 2001 on heroin possession charges, to which she plead no contest in September of last year. She was sentenced to 18 months probation, which she violated by failing a recent drug test. In 2002, Carter was charged with stealing her deceased boyfriend’s identity to fill orders for prescription drugs. She will attend a hearing in that case on April 12th. If convicted, Carter faces up to 12 years in prison. Carter’s sister, Rosey Carter Nix Adams, was found dead late last year outside Nashville in a converted school bus. Drug paraphernalia, including needles and pipes, were found near her body, but the official cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning from kerosene heaters being used on the bus. The Cash family issued an official statement regarding Carter’s latest arrest. They said, “The past several months have been traumatic for Carlene and the entire Carter and Cash families. We regret the current situation and Carlene faces and we will be supportive of her in overcoming the current challenges.”
